SRI’s analytical expertise is available to external clients from a broad range of food and non-food industries.
Benefits of SRI’s analytical services include:
- Improvements in sugar quality;
- Increases in yields;
- Improvements in processing technology; and
- Biomass characterisation.
Our work is backed by analytical support through experimental planning and design, quality assurance, staff training and instrument and method validation.
SRI can draw on the expertise of staff and external organisations, including universities, research establishments, equipment suppliers and government to provide solutions to problems.
Capabilities
SRI can perform analyses using a range of instrumental and classical techniques.
We can analyse:
- Water (boiler, effluent, feed);
- Vegetable (bagasse, green waste); and
- Animal feeds and foodstuffs (including beverages, sugars, acids, enzymes and fruits).
Our analytical portfolio includes:
- Analyses of sugar mill process streams for ash, pol, brix, colour, pH, sugars, trace elements, and other analytes;
- Trace compound analyses for numerous compounds;
- Analysis of evaporator and boiler waters for inorganic and organic contaminants;
- Analysis of membrane filtration efficiency;
- Cleaning compounds for evaporators and boilers;
- Biomass fuel characterisation;
- Boiler emissions testing;
- On-line instrument development, calibration and testing;
- Polysaccharide analyses by analytical gel permeation HPLC, NMR and GC-MS;
- Water analyses for nutrients, turbidity, pH, COD, and conductivity;
- Assessment of enzyme activity for invertases, amylases and dextranases; and
- Lab scale fermentations, including ethanol processes.
Our range of analytical instrumentation includes:
- HPLC with refractive index, pulsed amperemetry, conductivity, ultraviolet and chiral detection;
- GC-MS with an extensive range of external and in-house developed spectra ;
- UV-Vis spectrometers;
- Polarimeters;
- Laser light scattering spectrometry for particle characterisation;
- Portable combustion gas analysers and stack emissions test equipment; and
- Pressurised combustion/gasification apparatus for fuel characterisation.
Subcontracted Analyses
SRI maintains strong links with university, government and private analytical service providers and can supervise clients’ analytical requirements by subcontracting specialist analyses.
Such analyses include microbiological, trace metal, pesticide and environmental. Analytical control samples can be introduced, best turnaround times and lowest costs can be negotiated on behalf of clients.
