SRI’s commercial clients reap the benefits of SRI’s thorough experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics to resolve industrial problems.

SRI has applied CFD software successfully to a wide range of complex problems both during research and for consulting activities. We have the expertise to take advantage of the range of powerful tools offered by CFD software.

SRI’s major capabilities using CFD are:

  • Boiler modelling, in combination with measurements and the development of new boiler technologies. CFD has enabled simulation of combustion and tube erosion in bagasse fired boilers.
  • Sugar processing, resulting in development of the New Generation SRI Juice Clarifier, that has been very well received by the Australian sugar industry and by sugar clients overseas. CFD has promoted understanding of internal flow distribution.
  • Evaporation, where development of the SRI Roberts Evaporator design has demonstrated improvements to the flow patterns generated within the vessel to increase throughput rates and improve the heat transfer performance and steam economy. A model for the turbulent flow inside Roberts evaporators has been developed, including multiple species, phase change and multiphase effects. The models can predict residence time distribution within the vessel.
  • Simulation and development of a cane trash separation facility.
  • Vacuum pans, to simulate mixing in highly viscous non-Newtonian sugar solutions. The simulations have provided data for redesign of impellers. A vacuum pan flow model has been developed incorporating the phase change, bubble dynamics, crystallisation and free surface effects.
  • Gasification, to simulate the gasification of bagasse in a circulating gasifier and in a fluidised bed.
