examining by-products

SRI's commitment to improving clients' competitiveness is backed by extensive research into the economic value and uses of by-products and into pursuing value-adding options.

Our capabilities in diversifying the income stream from the by-products of sugarcane include:

  • Ethanol - since the 1970s, SRI has continuously researched ethanol, reflecting Australian sugar factories' efforts to cut rising fuel costs;
  • A vast range of projects targeting bagasse and trash (harvest by-product) utilisation as a value-added product. Studies include examination of bagasse and trash utilisation for cattle stock feed, electricity generation, pulp and paper, ethanol, bio-oils and other chemical compounds including polymers and lignin, and biodegradable packaging materials; and
  • Examination of the risks associated with by-product use and development, including financial and marketing risks.

We specialise in:

  • Earning increased revenue from a currently low value feedstock;
  • The long term viability benefits resulting from better decision-making at the early stages of product diversification;
  • The benefits and risks associated with value-adding to bagasse and trash;
  • The technical barriers associated with bagasse and trash utilisation and how to overcome these hurdles;
  • Factory energy requirements, steam economy measures and surplus bagasse availability;
  • Whole of crop harvesting and low cost factory separation technology for trash recovery; and
  • Environmental benefits.
