SRI specialises in all aspects of sugarcane milling, cane preparation and diffusion, enhanced by the use of complex computer-based modelling.

Milling research

Our understanding of all aspects of sugarcane milling is backed with 54 years' experience. Early milling experiments to increase milling rates produced many breakthroughs that now form the basis of accepted milling practice.

Our capabilities are enhanced by our use of computer-based modelling of the milling process. We have developed empirical models to predict mill capacity, speed, load and torque, and mill performance in terms of extraction and bagasse moisture content.

Our specialist understanding of bagasse and juice flows through a crushing mill enables us to:

  • audit milling tandems;
  • identify performance deficiencies; and
  • propose solutions requiring changes to mill settings, control and equipment changes.

SRI is well equipped to conduct further research with access to small-scale shredders and mills, laboratory facilities and empirical and computational modelling facilities.

Our work portfolio includes:

  • Proposing expansion plans based on increasing capacity at minimum cost to achieve agreed performance targets;
  • Determining the capacity of a cane preparation station and estimate the effect of changes to the station on cane preparation and extraction; and
  • Assisting clients utilising diffusers with performance assessment, including cane preparation and dewatering mills.
