Clarification and filtration

[Print-friendly version]

Clarification performance in a sugar factory has received significant research attention in SRI's 56-year lifetime.

SRI has developed significant expertise and intellectual property to help clients improve sugar quality and enhance pan and fugal stage productivities.

Our capabilities include:

  • Integrating the New Generation SRI Clarifier package into a new or existing factory;
  • Providing technical and economic feasibility studies outlining options to pre-process streams for value-adding and by-product development;
  • Designing plant for juice processing including lime saccharate preparation and pH control, juice heaters, flocculant systems and flash tanks; and
  • Performing clarification audits to identify opportunities for improved clarification standards.
  • Use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to investigate flows in reaction tanks and flotation clarifiers;
  • Application of both dissolved air and dispersed air for scum flotation; and
  • Providing design specifications for a clarification process for raw and white sugar or melt liquor for refined sugar.

SRI expertise can assist clients with mud processing problems through:

  • Investigation of options to recover sucrose and reduce the filter cake moisture;
  • Design improvements to the rotary drum filter; and
  • Value-adding opportunities using mud filter cake as an ingredient.

Our clarification and filtration expertise can also be applied to provide solutions to clients for:

  • Removal of solids from boiler ash water before recycling;
  • Waste water treatments to comply with statutory requirements and improved environmental performance; and
  • Application of membrane filtration for improved factory performance, sugar quality and as a pre-treatment for value-adding processes.
