SRI has undertaken significant research and development into most aspects of environmental and waste management in sugar processing.

Research capabilities and major achievements:

  • Bagasse spore/dust control during bagasse handling and storage pile design to avoid spontaneous combustion;
  • Computational fluid dynamics modelling of bagasse boilers to minimise emissions;
  • Development of tools for the management of factory water balances to minimise wastewater flows from a factory;
  • Mill mud and ash disposal;
  • Effluent treatment systems design and optimisation.
  • Environmental audits; and
  • Training.

We specialise in:

  • Development of specialised boiler CFD codes used these in real world applications to minimise unburnt fuel carryover and emissions of other pollutants. SRI also uses proprietary codes to model boiler stack plume emissions and to optimise wet scrubbers;
  • Developing systems, methodologies and benchmarks for auditing sugar factories and comparing with best practice;
  • We conduct numerous effluent system investigations, plant upgrades and commissioning of new systems;
  • We transfer the benefits of our knowledge to industry technologists through training courses.
