SRI Engineering Courses

Sugar Research Institute’s engineering courses are designed for factory staff who are working towards or have achieved supervisor level. The courses enhance participants’ performance through a greater understanding of day-to-day operations of raw sugar factories. These courses can also be customised to suit the specific training requirements of factories.

SRI engineering courses include:

Engineering Supervisors

Advanced – 3 days

The Engineering Supervisors course provides a technical understanding of the extraction and steam generation areas of the factory.

This course provides technical descriptions of plant and processes in the areas of shredding, milling and boiler operation, and focuses on operational aspects of these areas. It covers all aspects of the sugar factory boilers including:

  • Tutorial and workshop sessions to address the design, operation and maintenance of boilers, as well as boiler theory
  • Operational and maintenance issues associated with extraction plant, extraction processes, terminology and measurement techniques

Efficient Use of High Pressure and Process Steam

Advanced – 2 days

The Efficient Use of High Pressure and Process Steam course covers energy use within a raw sugar factory and delivers integrated coverage of high and low pressure steam usage during raw sugar manufacture.

Starting from the factory steam balance and the high and low pressure steam cycles, the course progresses through the options available in juice heating, evaporation, and pan stage operation to improve steam economy. The effects on other parts of factory operations, such as the cooling water cycle are included.

Approximately two thirds of the course addresses the low-pressure side of factory operation. New sugar industry technology options are also presented.

Extraction Theory and Practice for Milling Engineers

Advanced – 3 days

The Extraction Theory and Practice for Milling Engineers course combines the content of two courses – ‘Introduction to Extraction for Shift Supervisors’ and ‘Advanced Extraction’.

This course provides participants with a sound basis for making technical decisions about cane preparation, extraction, and mill control strategies.

The course covers the theory associated with cane preparation and extraction, and includes workshop sessions to cover the practical issues associated with mill setting and control.

Introduction to Extraction for Shift Supervisors

Introduction – 1.5 days

The Introduction to Extraction for Shift Supervisors course provides an introduction to extraction processes with a focus on cane preparation. It covers operational and maintenance issues associated with extraction plant and describes extraction processes, terminology and measurement techniques.

Advanced Extraction

Advanced – 1.5 days

The Advanced Extraction course focuses on mill setting and builds on the setting concepts from the introductory course.

The course uses SRI MILSET software to help gain an understanding of the main mill setting concepts, and provides milling engineers with the required skills to make decisions about mill setting and control.

Steam Generation

Advanced – 1.5 days

This course covers all aspects of the steam generation including design, operation and maintenance of boilers, as well as boiler theory.

The course is aimed at shift supervisors, or participants who are likely to become shift supervisors.
